For an overseas business serving Chinese-speaking customers, Xiaohongshu can be worth investigating. The decision should start with a clear commercial question: are the people discovering your content likely to become customers you can actually serve?
A restaurant in Toronto, a service business in Sydney and an online retailer shipping within the UK have different requirements. Each needs relevant interest in its market, an offer people can understand, and a workable path from interest to an enquiry or purchase.
Xiaohongshu marketing deserves a focused assessment before it becomes another ongoing expense.
Define what “right for your business” means
Set a business outcome before judging the platform.
For a restaurant, that might be enquiries about a menu or bookings from local customers. For a service company, it could be suitable appointment requests. For a retailer, it might be purchases from a delivery market that produces an acceptable margin.
Followers, views and saves provide context, but they do not establish commercial fit on their own.
Also define who you want to reach. “Chinese-speaking customers overseas” is a starting description. Your actual audience needs a location, a reason to consider the offer and a practical way to use it.
Look for evidence in your own market
Begin by investigating content related to your city, product category or service.
Look at the questions people ask. Are they comparing local options, planning a visit, asking about availability or discussing how a product works?
Treat this as qualitative research. Visible activity cannot tell you the full size of a market or predict what your account will achieve.
Location deserves particular attention. Someone interested in a Sydney business may live locally, be visiting later, or simply enjoy the content. Those situations can have different business value.
A useful research exercise is to list relevant questions and classify them by whether your business can answer and serve the person asking. This gives the content plan a stronger basis than copying popular posts from an unrelated market.
Consider whether your offer benefits from explanation
Some offers give you useful material to demonstrate.
A restaurant can show a dish, explain menu options and answer practical questions about visiting. A home service can explain its process and what is included. A product business can demonstrate size, materials, use cases and suitability.
These are possible content angles, rather than a ranking of industries guaranteed to perform well on Xiaohongshu.
An offer may be harder to communicate if the benefit is unclear, the business has little relevant material to show, or customers need information the account cannot provide.
Before launching, write several specific questions a potential customer would ask. If the team can answer them with useful information and original material, there is a practical starting point for content.
Assess your ability to create and respond
Content marketing requires more than opening an account.
Someone needs to collect suitable photos or video, check product and service information, prepare the posts and respond to questions. The work must continue after the initial launch.
For written content, choose English, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese according to the intended audience and purpose. A Chinese version should sound natural and make local details understandable.
A translated caption alone may leave gaps. Prices, service areas, product dimensions, availability and booking arrangements need to make sense for the market being addressed.
If the business cannot handle questions in Chinese, plan an accurate support process before promising that service. The account should represent what customers will actually receive.
Check that the customer journey is workable
Xiaohongshu’s official professional-account platform lists business tools such as account insights, profile management, interaction tools and promotion options.[1] That is a reason to investigate the account setup carefully, rather than assume every feature is available to every overseas business.
Before committing to paid promotion, confirm business eligibility, category requirements, available advertising options and how the intended market can be reached.
Confirm the enquiry or transaction tools permitted for your account. Xiaohongshu’s community rules call for transparent business identities and transactions through platform-provided tools.[2] Build the customer journey around the options that apply to your account and business category.
This operational step affects commercial fit. A post can generate interest while leaving the business unable to handle that interest appropriately.
Run a small test with a clear question
A manageable pilot might cover one service area, one main offer and a small set of content themes.
For example, a hypothetical restaurant could test menu explanations, a guide to visiting and answers to common booking questions. A product business could test demonstrations, comparisons of its own product versions and practical use advice.
Decide what evidence would justify continuing before the pilot begins. Look for relevant enquiries, customer questions that progress, and results the business can connect with its sales or booking records.
A four-week pilot could be a useful first learning period for some businesses. It is an example planning window, not a platform rule or a promise that sales will arrive within four weeks.
Review the questions received and the locations or needs customers voluntarily share. Avoid inferring customer identity from a username, a written script or an interest in a post.
Give Xiaohongshu a role alongside other marketing
The platform does not need to handle the entire customer journey to contribute useful activity.
For one business, its role might be explaining the offer and answering questions. Another may find that suitable enquiries are the main value. A third may find insufficient relevant demand to continue.
Google Ads and Meta Ads can have their own roles based on searches, creative opportunities and measurable outcomes. Review the guide to reaching Chinese-speaking customers with Google Ads and Meta Ads when planning those channels.
Keep the offer and important business details consistent across channels. If a customer sees different service areas, pricing explanations or language-support promises, the resulting uncertainty can affect enquiries.
Make the investment conditional on evidence
Xiaohongshu may fit your overseas business when there is relevant customer interest, useful content to produce and a supported path to a meaningful outcome.
If those pieces are still unclear, start with research and a limited pilot. Review the evidence before expanding content production or paid promotion.
At TerryKX Media, I help businesses assess Xiaohongshu marketing for overseas audiences, including audience fit, content direction and how it relates to the wider marketing plan.
Discuss whether Xiaohongshu fits your business. Share your location, offer, intended customers and the outcome you want to achieve.
